“It’s in the Warp: Color and Design in Rep”
The Weavers of Orlando, WoO, presents “It’s in the Warp: Color and Design in Rep” for its October 20, 2018 monthly meeting. Noted author and fiber artist Rosalie Neilson will introduce us to the rich world of color and design in rep.
The program will take place in the ground-floor meeting room of the Westminster Towers, located at 1111 S. Lakemont Ave, Winter Park, FL on October 20 at 11:00 AM. A casual, networking opportunity – a time to discuss ‘what’s on your loom’ and get technical advice from the guild’s advance-level fiber artists – begins at 9:30 AM. The guild’s business meeting takes place at 10:00 AM, followed by a very popular ‘Show and Tell’. The featured guest speaker is introduced at 11:00 AM. This month, the program will help guests and members the art of rep weaving. “I will discuss how ‘blocks’ of rep, threaded on four and eight shafts, can be combined to expand design possibilities,” reported Ms. Neilson.
Rep weave is a fascinating weave structure with warp density of four times the normal tabby sett. Placemats and runners woven in rep are long lasting and have great body. The weave structure is a variant on plain weave, providing a beautiful surface for subtle color changes. Two different colored warps- a pattern colorway and a background colorway – combine with thick and thin weft to form the elements for exploring block design in warp-faced rep.
It has been suggested that the origin of the term is a corruption of the French word for ‘rib’ i.e. ‘rep,’ ‘rip,’ ‘repp,’ or ‘reps.’ The technique is cloth woven in fine cords or ribs across the width of a piece, usually made of silk, wool, or cotton.
